Loads with excessive dimensions will be hauled on a Schnabel car. As seen in the pictures at right, these incredibly complex railroad cars can have ten axles or more, to distribute the weight of the excessive dimension load.

The axles on a Schnabel car are typically set up in an "equalizer" design, so each axle bears the same amount of weight. On some of the more sophisticated Schnabel cars, an operator must ride along and guide the load around corners and obstructions. Many times the railroad engineering department must also move certain obstructions that cannot be maneuvered around by train. It is important to begin the planning process for heavy rail transport as early as possible with the right contractor.
